SCA Sensory Skills Intermediate (2 Days) $1,300
This 2 day course will prepare you for roles in the coffee industry where sensory skills are integral in the evaluation of coffee, including:
- Coffee roasters
- Green coffee buyers or sellers
- Quality control managers
This course is excellent preparation for the Q Grader course and cup tasting competitions.
The extensive practical activities will develop and improve your sensory skills, including:
- How to discriminate between various intensities of acidity and bitterness in solution.
- How to identify and categorise key aromas in coffee.
- How to identify common mouthfeel sensations.
- How to identify and rate intensity differences of attributes in coffee.
You will learn important aspects of sensory science and sensory assessment, including:
- How human physiology is used to smell and taste.
- How sensory perception is impacted by psychology.
- How points in the coffee value chain impact coffee flavour.
- Understanding the 3 main test types used in sensory assessment - Difference, Descriptive, and Affective.
- How to use common QC sensory tests including Triangulation, In/Out, and Difference From Control.
- How to use the SCA CVA cupping forms.
- How to use sensory tests to assess and improve the sensory skills of yourself and others.
Although there are no pre-requisites for this course, it is expected that participants have some cupping experience or have completed the SCA Sensory Skills Foundation course.
Students who successfully complete the practical exam on day 2 of the course must then successfully complete an online exam after the course to receive the internationally recognised SCA Sensory Skills Intermediate certification. SCA Sensory Skills Intermediate certification earns credit towards the SCA Roastery Diploma and the SCA Coffee Trade Diploma.

Pre-requisites: It is recommended that you have completed the SCA Introduction to Coffee certification, and have some experience of working in this field before attempting this level, or have successfully passed SCA Sensory Skills Foundation.

Simon James has over 26 years experience in the coffee industry as a barista, competitor, judge, and trainer.
He is a Q Grader instructor with over 11 years experience teaching the SCA/SCAE Sensory skills, Barista Skills, Brewing, and Green Coffee courses, including lead instructor roles at barista camps in Italy, Estonia, Poland, and Taiwan.
His course materials are carefully designed to cater for students of all skill levels, and he has extensive experience and expertise in communicating with students who have English as an additional language, as well as the ability to adjust his teaching style to suit the individual needs of students.

If the organiser cancels the class:
You are entitled to a full refund.
If you can't attend the class:
You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

- A refund can be requested 14 days before class starts. An admin fee of AU$20.00 applies.
- A transfer can be requested 14 days before the class starts. Free of charge.
No changes will be allowed after these times.

However, your instructor may allow you to use a device for translation assistance where necessary.
