Home DIY Basics Workshop
Don’t call in the experts—become one yourself. This hands-on 2-day Home DIY workshop is designed to give beginners practical skills and confidence for basic household maintenance and repairs.
You will practise using tools safely, working with common household materials, drilling and fixing into different surfaces, repairing walls, tiling, and completing simple plumbing tasks. The workshop is practical, confidence-building, and includes time to ask the instructor about your own DIY projects.
Course Content
- Day 1: Workshop safety, preparing your workspace, common household materials, DIY toolbox essentials, drills and drivers, cutting, drilling, fixing into timber and masonry, and creating a tiled pot coaster.
- Day 2: Grouting and finishing, gyprock wall construction, identifying hidden hazards, using stud finders, wall anchors, wall repairs, S-bends, tap mechanisms, changing washers, and DIY tips for small spaces.
- Course content may vary slightly depending on class pace, participant questions, interests, and instructor approach.

- Current listed sessions are held at The Summer Hill Workshop, 7 Prospect Road, Summer Hill NSW 2131. Your confirmed venue will be listed on your enrolment confirmation.

You will learn
- Use drills, drivers, drill bits and fixings safely for different household surfaces.
- Understand timber-framed and gyprock walls, hidden hazards, wall anchors and basic repairs.
- Complete practical tiling and plumbing tasks, including grouting and changing a washer.

- Hands-on practice with common DIY tools, materials and household repair techniques.
- A practical tiled pot coaster project to practise measuring, marking, gluing, tiling and finishing.
- Instructor guidance, safety tips and Q&A time for your own home DIY projects.

Preparation
What to bring
- Any drills or tools from home that you would like to learn how to use.
- Personal protective equipment: face mask, safety glasses or goggles, earmuffs or earplugs, and gloves.
- Old clothes, closed-in shoes, a hat or cap if preferred, and hair tied back if long.

Cancellations & Refunds
If the organiser cancels the class:
You are entitled to a full refund.
If you can't attend the class:
You’re welcome to send someone in your place.
OR
- A refund can be requested 10 days before class starts. An admin fee of AU$45.00 applies.

At the same time, we’re a not-for-profit organisation that commits resources to running each class—so last-minute cancellations can significantly impact our ability to offer quality, affordable programs.
That’s why we’ve created a simple, transparent policy that balances your need for flexibility with our need to plan and deliver courses sustainably. Our cancellation policy offers two clear options, depending on when you notify us:
Cancel More Than 10 Days Before the Course Starts – You can choose to receive a full refund, minus a $45 administration fee OR a non-refundable credit note valid for 12 months for the full value you paid for the course. This credit can be used towards any future course at the College.
Option 2: Cancel Within 10 Days of the Course Starting - You’ll receive a credit note valid for 12 months for 50% of the course fee you paid for the course. This credit can be used towards any future course at the College.
Please note that both refund and credit options are only available before the course begins. Once the course has started—or if you decide to withdraw after it has commenced—no refunds or credits can be issued. If you need to cancel your enrolment, just email us and we’ll take care of it based on the timelines above.
