Unlock the full potential of your craft with the Handweavers and Spinners Guild of Victoria’s Certificate of Spinning. 

This comprehensive 19-session course is designed for hand spinners eager to take a deeper look at their craft. 

Guided by a team of specialist tutors, the Certificate will cover spinning wheel mechanics, fiber characteristics, preparation methods using a variety of professional tools and how to choose the spinning technique to match your fibre and purpose of the yarn you are creating.

Throughout this hands-on journey, you will build a comprehensive, personal reference folio backed by substantial, exclusive course notes. The program culminates in a capstone final project, allowing you to showcase your newfound skills. You will leave with an invaluable archive of knowledge that will inspire your textile craft for years to come.

The Certificate of Spinning will be held on Sundays, 9.30am-2.30pm:

  • August 9th - Introduction
  • August 30th - Spinning theory, wheel mechanics and fleece washing
  • September 13th - Fibre preparation
  • October 11th - Worsted spinning part 1
  • November 8th - Worsted spinning part 2 / Woollen spinning part 1
  • November 29th - Woollen spinning part 2
  • December 13th - Fleece selection
  • January 31st - Mohair
  • February 14th - Alpaca
  • March 14th - Camel, angora, cashmere and other luxury animal fibres
  • April 11th - Tencel, soy and bamboo
  • May 9th - Cotton
  • May 30th - Flax
  • June 13th - Silk part 1
  • July 11th - Silk part 2
  • August 8th - Colour theory and blending
  • September 12th - Building yarns: beehives, supercoils and core yarns
  • October 10th - Creative plying: crepe, cable and boucle
  • November 14th - Indigo dyeing


Payment options: You can pay for the Certificate in a single lump sum or in installments. If the installment plan set out does not work for you, please contact HWSGVteaching@gmail.com to discuss options.

5 hours x 19 Months

You will learn

  • Through hands-on practice you will prepare a wide range of fibres using a variety of tools and techniques
  • Learn to design and spin the yarn you want using different drafting, plying and creative techniques
  • Learn how to use colour theory in your hand spinning, plus an opportunity to learn indigo vat dyeing

You will get

  • Substantial notes written exclusively for the Certificate of Spinning on all subjects covered
  • You will create a comprehensive reference folio for your own future personal reference
  • A final project that demonstrates aspects of what you have learnt throughout the course

Appropriate for

Spinners who can spin a continuous thread confidently and want to delve deeper into the art and science of handspinning


Preparation

What to bring

  • A spinning wheel in good working order
  • A minimum of 3 bobbins to use with your wheel, plus lazy kate and niddy noddy
  • Wool fibres will be provided as part of the course cost. Specialty fibres to be purchased as needed - your tutors will give you details

The Guild's aim is to bring together those who practise handweaving, spinning and allied crafts and to help and encourage them to increase their knowledge, understanding and skills by discussion, demonstration, exhibition, teaching and the provision of quality resource materials.

Our Guild rooms house an excellent library and craft supply, sell members work and host a wonderful range of interest groups, classes and workshops.

We have members and affiliated groups throughout the state.

Cancellations & Refunds

If the organiser cancels the class:

You are entitled to a full refund.

If you can't attend the class:

You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

OR

  • A refund can be requested 7 days before class starts. Free of charge.
  • A transfer can be requested 7 days before the class starts. Free of charge.

No changes will be allowed after these times.
