Frequently Asked Questions

  • Most pottery classes include clay, tools, and firing of finished pieces. For example, beginner wheel workshops typically include 2-3 items fired and glazed. Longer courses (6-8 weeks) often include 4-10kg of clay per student plus all materials and kiln firing. Some specialized classes like Raku firing or hand-building workshops include all materials and up to 3 pieces fired. Additional items beyond the included amount are usually available at $15 per item. Check individual class descriptions for specific inclusions.

  • Fired and glazed pieces are typically ready for collection in 2-4 weeks after your class ends. Most studios email you when items are ready to be picked up. You will usually have a 2-3 week window to collect your work before the studio may recycle uncollected pieces. For example, beginner wheel workshops notify students approximately 3-4 weeks after class completion.

  • No experience is required for beginner classes. Most introductory offerings explicitly state 'no experience required' and are designed as proper structured lessons rather than drop-in activities. These include 2-hour taster classes, 4-week courses, and 6-8 week beginner programs. However, intermediate and advanced courses do require prior experience—typically completion of at least 2-3 beginner-level terms or equivalent experience elsewhere.

  • Bring an apron and towel to every class. Wear clothes that can get dirty and closed shoes (essential for safety). Pottery is a hands-on activity involving wet clay and splashing. You do not need to bring clay, tools, or glazes—these are provided by the studio. Some classes with social components may provide additional items like grazing boards or refreshments.

  • Most beginner pottery classes cap at 10-15 students per session. For example, Friday night taster wheel classes are capped at 12 to ensure participants receive real instruction rather than spending time waiting for turns at the wheel. Smaller group sizes allow instructors to provide individual guidance and ensure adequate hands-on time for each student.

  • Yes. Most studios offer Studio Access Time (SATs) for current or past students. These are independent studio sessions where you can work on your own projects using the studio's clay, glazes, and facilities. For example, Slow Clay Centre offers weekly SAT sessions, and Clay Talk provides Monday, Thursday, and Sunday evening access (10am-2pm and 5pm-9pm). Holiday access is also available. SATs are designed for students familiar with studio systems and are not instructor-led sessions.
